Thanks so much, Lassie. I'm just now getting these comments (my provider was down), and it's great to read your thoughts. You are right.

Mia, yes, we've thought about renting but we'd only be able to cover about 1/2 our mortgage, which would mean shelling out a lot every month, over and above what we'd be paying for our own housing. Plus, property taxes, etc. It's just not attractive unless rental prices go up a lot! It's our fault for buying such an expensive house when things were climbing, but (as you know) it's modest, and we thought we'd be staying forever. It's just my husband's company's plans changed.

P ~ Have you and M considered renting out your house for now? You have a great house in a superbly coveted area...surely the market will come 'round. This has happened before, in the Bay Area, back in the very early 90's. The only people who got zapped were the ones who absolutely had to get out. If you were able to hold on, well, you saw what the market was like by the mid 90s and up until just this year! Anyway, if you rent it, and ride out the slump, I'd be willing to bet you could be back to making money..... Plus, babies aren't expensive. haha!

Girl, I absolutely understand and sympathize with your situation. We're sort of going through the same thing - apart from the fact that (you were right) we don't even have any savings. In any case, I know what it feels like to constantly worry about financial matters. What we both need to focus on, though, is that we are so lucky in SO many ways - we're having babies!! Isn't that in itself just absolutely wonderful? Also, we both have supportive husbands, don't we? Who says that things will stay the way they are? We can definetely improve our situation eventually - who or what keeps us from doing that? Whenever I worry (and get contractions doing so), I try to picture my grandparents when they had their first child - there was a war going on and suddenly they had nothing! I can't even begin to imagine what it must've been like for them and yet they made it. Our situation is not the worst possible one and it's not always going to be all doom and gloom. *hugs*
